SPECIFICATION AND STANDARD FOR STRUCTURAL STEELWORK: GENERAL PART 10 - PAINTING

1.16.1       General

1.16.1.1    Painting shall be carried out in accordance with BS EN ISO 14713 and BS 6150 and the paint manufacturers recommendations and instructions.

1.16.1.2    Unless noted otherwise, all steelwork to be painted shall be painted with one coat of zinc chromate primer, one undercoat and two finishing coats of approved enamel paint.

1.16.2       Paints

1.16.2.1    All paints unless otherwise specified shall comply with SS 5, SS 6, SS 7, SS 34 and
BS 2523 where applicable.

1.16.3       Storage of Paint

1.16.3.1    Paint shall be stored in sealed containers and must not be exposed to extreme temperature.  Any storage conditions specified by the manufacturer shall be strictly observed.

1.16.3.2    All paints and other products shall be marked or labeled and stored in such a way that identification of product and batch numbers is possible at all times.

1.16.4       Shelf Life of Paint

1.16.4.1    Paint, which exceeds theshelf life” specified on the containers by the manufacturer, or paint which in the opinion of SCI has deteriorated and is not fit for use shall be rejected.

1.16.5       Application Procedure Trials

1.16.5.1    The Contractor shall carry out paint application procedure trials, as instructed by the Engineer, either at the fabricators workshop or at the site, where appropriate, with the equipment and labour to be used in the works.

1.16.5.2    Where procedure trials are required, no painting shall be permitted until procedure trials have been completed and approved by the Engineer.
